Five ports, one destination
Every ferry to Tunisia calls at the same port: Tunis (La Goulette). The choice is therefore made entirely by the departure port in Europe, and that decides both the length of the crossing and the drive to it.
Genoa is the northernmost and the easiest to reach from central and western Europe. Civitavecchia near Rome and Salerno south of Naples lie closer to Tunisia and cut the time at sea, but they require the drive down through Italy.
Marseille is the French departure port, and Palermo in Sicily is the shortest crossing of them all: from there Tunis is a single night away.
What to watch out for in the timetable
Traffic to Tunisia follows the summer peak. In the holiday months the ships sail frequently and run full; in winter the schedule thins out on several routes. A weekday with a sailing in August need not have one in February.
All the routes are overnight crossings and long ones. The cabin is therefore part of the journey, and in high season it goes before the vehicle space and the deck place do.
Expect border and customs checks at the port before boarding. They make the time at the terminal longer than on any ferry link inside Europe.
